That’s the absolutely fantastic work of Fernanda Viégas (http://fernandaviegas.com/). If I am not wrong, she is still the head of Google’s “Big Picture” data visualization initiative.
I live in New Orleans, and we were actually on the outer edge of Sandy’s circulation. It was amazing to watch the winds push Lake Pontchartrain out to sea and then kick up 10 – 15 ft waves on the Southshore. Definitely a little different than out typical tropical storm experience.
